The story behind the artwork

Cavern is a general response to the many caves I’ve been able to explore. What strikes me most while inside a cave is its silence. My painting represents the sensation of being deep inside a cavern. Sight is limited to only where the light of your torch can reach. The silence can be nearly absolute; your ears hum with the sound of your own blood pumping through your body. It can be both scary and fun at times to turn off your light and listen.

As with my botanical images, cavern has a humanlike quality. My image could be easily mistaken for the inside of a womb or the inside of an ear. Either alternative can be associated with the cavern experience.
