The story behind the artwork

Red corolla is a botanical abstract work. The title refers to the center of a flower or plant, but this image has other references as well. As a scuba diver I am always inspired by what I see on the coral reefs. Many things you see underwater are surprisingly red. They appear green or blue to us underwater because of color absorption. But, if you shine a torch on an object underwater you will see its natural color. Often times this will be a surprising red color! What a delight! It is easy to think of corals as plants or flowers because of the shapes they come in and the fact that they often do not appear to move, but they are in truth animals, not plants. This image in particular is inspired by soft corals and egg ribbons. They have an undeniable botanical appearance. What fascinates me about underwater life is that things are not always as they appear. It's like turning everything you know about the world upside down.
