The story behind the artwork

The Grand Canyon is one of the most significant features of North America's southwest. It is an enormous gash carved into the earth over millions of years by forces of nature and most significantly the Colorado River. The Canyon is 6,000 feet deep and never fails to impress me. Being a world-heritage site and popular destination, it is sometimes hard to see the bottom of this canyon without extensive planning.

My first time to the bottom was a double-crossing I planned five months in advance. This is the easiest plan logistically, and one of the toughest to execute. My husband and I hiked from the South Rim, all the way to the bottom of the canyon and up to the North Rim in one day. We spent that night in a cabin, and then the next day hiked all the way back to the campground on the South Rim where we had left our car and tent. It was an awesome weekend overview of the Grand Canyon for me. My painting, river, reflects this experience.
