My Style and Influences

I am often asked what style I paint in. This is such an excellent question! I usually like to answer with "abstract based on natural form." Many people nod and seem to understand this explanation. I realize that technically this makes no sense at all. Abstract, as a style, generally means there are no visual references used that relate to the natural world. My work relies heavily on references from the natural world. So technically speaking, I suppose my work is more a form of expressionism. I use form based on visual references in an exaggerated way. I express emotion through these forms and through my use of color. This is what the expressionists have done since the early 1900s.

I am inspired by many abstract expressionists, so I still love to include that word "abstract" when I can. Helen Frankenthaler, and Mark Rothko being my all time favorites. When I look at their work I simply melt. They are masters of turning color and texture into raw emotion.

My biggest influence of all time is Georgia O'Keeffe. People have a hard time clasifying her work within a "style" as well. Often she is listed as an American Painter, which I most certainly am as well. If you haven't already, you should check out her museum in Santa Fe. Her work truly speaks to me in a way no others can. Many people notice the similarities in our styles. I always find it flattering when people see my work and say they are reminded of O'Keeffe.

O'Keeffe saw art as a spiritual endeavor and her work was extremely personal to her. It was her vision, how she saw the world around her. This is exactly how I feel about my work as well. When I read her journals I understand completely where she is coming from.
